This is the sub-question hiding inside disc brakes. Once you’ve decided on discs over rim brakes, there’s a second fork: the disc brake can be operated by a cable, exactly like a rim brake but clamping a rotor at the hub, or by hydraulic fluid in a sealed line. The rotor and pads are much the same either way; what differs is how the squeeze of your hand reaches them, and that one difference shapes how they feel, what they cost, and how you look after them. What each one is
A mechanical disc brake pulls a steel cable when you squeeze the lever, and the cable tugs an arm on the caliper that presses the pads onto the rotor. It’s the same cable-and-lever idea as a rim brake, moved to a disc.
A hydraulic disc brake replaces the cable with a closed line of fluid. Squeezing the lever pushes a piston that pressurises the fluid, and the fluid pushes the caliper’s pistons and pads onto the rotor. Nothing stretches or drags, and the force multiplies through the fluid, so a light pull at the lever becomes a strong, even clamp at the wheel.

How they feel
The everyday difference you’d notice is effort and smoothness. A hydraulic brake gives you more stopping power for a lighter squeeze, and meters it more finely, so you can hold a gentle, precise amount of braking without a firm grip. That’s nice on a long descent or a heavily loaded bike, and it’s easier on tired or smaller hands. A good mechanical disc brake still stops you perfectly well; it just asks for a firmer pull and feels a little less refined doing it.
Living with them
This is where the choice really lands, because the two age very differently.
A mechanical brake is the opposite rhythm: a little routine attention, but attention you can give it. As the pads wear the bite drifts, and you bring it back with the barrel adjuster or a hex key in a couple of minutes. A cable can be replaced anywhere. Nothing about it needs a specialist, which is why cable discs are loved by tourers and anyone who likes to fix their own bike far from a shop. Which suits you
Lean hydraulic if you want the strongest, smoothest brakes for the least hand effort, if you ride hills or carry loads, if refined feel matters to you, and if you’re happy to visit a shop for the occasional bleed. It’s the quieter, lower-fuss choice day to day, and it’s why most quality new bikes now come with it.
Lean mechanical if you value simplicity and self-sufficiency, if you tour or ride far from bike shops, if you like to do all your own maintenance, or if a tighter budget is in play. It gives up some feel and power for the ability to understand and fix every part of it yourself.
The short of it
For ordinary city and commuting distances, both types will stop a loaded bike safely and last for years, so this is not a decision to agonise over. Choose hydraulic for the nicest feel and the least day-to-day thought, mechanical for the simplest, most self-serviceable brake. Then, whichever you have, keep the pads clean and learn the home adjustments, because a well-set brake of either kind beats a neglected one of the other.
